The pinnacles of your health journey.
It is that time of year again when folks look to shed a few pounds and focus on health. Give our podcast a listen!
Unfortunately, most times by March, this becomes a distant concern of the past. "maybe next year" they say. Year after year, health is set aside until that dreadful visit to the physician. Oftentimes, it is only then that most get serious about doing something immediately.
The downside of this approach is that stress makes hard even harder, and nothing is more stressful than your medical team informing you that you need to lose weight now.
I've been in the wellness industry for most of my life, and one thing is sure...nobody agrees on the secret to health. One reason for this is that not all studies suggest that there is one. Lifestyle is the key to health and that includes all sorts of things, including:
Movement
Nutrition
Stress
Sleep
Socialization
These pinnacles of lifestyle set the stage for a longer life leading to more independence and wellness. In the end, you cannot out-exercise a bad diet, and sometimes hunger cues are really emotional cues seeking something else disguised as hunger. Another trend is sweat to death on an elliptical, rather than spending that same time cross-training between cardio, strength training, and recovery. We all have different dominant muscle fiber types, but we all need all of them. Here are some of my favorite ways to get my movement on:
Yoga...ok I'm partial, of course. Yoga can be anything from a sweaty vinyasa flow to a recovery yin yoga class.
Dance: I'm not good at dancing. Honestly, I look like Elaine from Seinfeld when I dance. But boy does it feel so good and such a fun way to get my heart rate up.
Weights: Try keeping your two-pound weights in eyeshot if this one is hard for you. Aging is a time when bone density begins to diminish, and this can be lessened by weight training. Weight training is amongst the most effective ways to build metabolism, improve heart health, and increase bone density. Adding this in just twice a week can go a long way in helping reduce stress and improve sleep.
